What’s on in June

There’s loads happening around these parts this month so I thought I’d round up a few local events that might be of interest. I think we’re all keeping our fingers crossed that this awful weather improves as promised!

If you’re in the Dorking area the following might be of interest to you and yours:

On June 6th, there’s an organised walk on Leith Hill for those in their 20s and 30s. If you’ve not yet explored Leith Hill, the this is a great opportunity to do so. The views from the top are amazing. Even on only a relatively clear day you can see the arch of Wembley Stadium.

Once you get back down the hill, why not head to St. Paul’s Church with a picnic for the Brockham Choral Society’s summer concert: The Wit and Wisdom of Noel Coward. It promises to be a great evening so fingers crossed for sunshine!

On 7th June we in the hills are being invaded – by the South London Orienteers and their annual Surrey Hills Race. Good luck if you’re taking part!

Anyone for tennis? Well, why not pop down to the Dorking Lawn Tennis and Squash Club on the 14th for their Open Day? Tea and Cake will be thrown in, as well as a chance to see what the Club has to offer.

If you want to find out more about the history of Dorking then why not join in with the Museum’s Family Fun Day this month: Explore the High Street? It’s taking place on the afternoon of the 20th.

Finally for the Dorking round-up, serious golfers might fancy the Pro-Am tournament at Betchworth Park on the 25th of the month. The Captain’s charity this year is the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

In the Redhill area the following fab events are taking place this month:

The All Saints’ Church Summer Fayre in Merstham is on the 13th.

The next day why not head to the Aerodrome for an amazing Aviation Festival and Fly In. Save some pennies by buying your tickets in advance but don’t forget the event is raising funds for the vital work of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.

At the end of the month a trip to Priory Farm is a must for the Strawberry Fair Food Festival on the weekend of the 27th and 28th. Should be a great day out and entry is free but you’re bound to come home armed with goodies from the amazing artisan producers you’ll meet there: Once you try, you’re bound to want to buy!

In Reigate there are also some really fun events happening in June:

Cullenders still has some space for its Meatheads pop-up on the evenings of the 5th and 6th. A really tasty menu is on offer and, despite the name, there are veggie options too.

Gatton Park’s gardens are open on the 7th June. Check out the blog later in the month for a round-up of local gardens open for the NGS open gardens event.

The monthly Cave opening in June is on the 13th – well worth a visit, you’ll not believe what’s down there!

Also on the 13th the Children’s Trust, an amazing local charity, is holding a donkey derby at its main sight in Tadworth. Kids go free and it’s only £3 for adults. You can even name a donkey for £20 – how many Eeyores will they allow I wonder?

If you fancy a tipple, Vineking is holding a Mid-Summer wine tasting at Reigate Priory Cricket Club on the evening of the 18th. There’ll be over 100 wines to try and the ticket cost (£15) is refundable if you spend £200 or more.

If you want to head slightly further afield, don’t forget it’s the Derby Festival at Epsom Racecourse on the 5th and 6th. There’s always a great atmosphere on the Downs on Derby day.

Horley Carnival is happening on the 20th. The theme this year is Around the World – sounds great!

The annual Cranleigh Show is on the 21st. It features a motorcycle stunt show, as well as the usual agricultural exhibits and you can save 20% on your ticket price by buying in advance online, only £11 for adults.

Armed Forces Day this year is being celebrated on the 27th June. There are events all over the county but Guildford will be celebrating in style.

Finally, on the 28th, why not head to the Fairfield Halls in Croydon for what promises to be an amazing performance of Mahler’s 8th Symphony. Members of the Buckland and Betchworth Choral Society have been busy rehearsing this difficult work for months and will be joining other choirs and choral societies for the performance. Why not go along and support them?

Also, a bit of a heads up for next month. The Reigate Community Festival is taking place in Priory Park on July 4th. Joining in with the celebrations for the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, this year’s theme is all things Medieval – Watch this space!
